Year 2002 winner: Jordan Hashemite Charity Organization

The Winner of the King Hussein Humanitarian Leadership Prize 2002:

The Jordan Hashemite Charity Organization, received the third King Hussein Humanitarian Leadership Prize on November 14th 2002 at a ceremony held at the Royal Court under the Patronage of His Majesty King Abdullah II.

His Majesty King Abdullah, patron of the King Hussein Foundation, presented the award to the Jordan Hashemite Charity Organization’s Secretary-General Dr. Abdul Salam Abbadi for its outstanding relief and humanitarian assistance in over 40 countries in the Middle East and West Asia. 

The Organization was choosen from among 88 different candidates from 11 countries. The Organization has provided critical disaster relief to victims of natural catastrophes, and has played a catalytic role in supporting victims of armed conflict during the Gulf crisis and in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo and Palestine, among other countries.

“The work of organizations like the Jordan Hashemite Charity was close to His Majesty King Hussein’s heart. He knew from wide experience that in times of catastrophe and strife, non-governmental charitable organizations can do things that governments cannot do alone... by using their specialized skills to make a speedy and decisive difference—sometimes the difference between life and death.” - Her Majesty Queen Noor speaking at the presentation ceremony.

Queen Noor said that the Organization's work reflected great credit on Jordan as a country that stands ready to care for the victimized and the oppressed. “Its work reflects and honors His Majesty King Hussein’s lifelong dedication to the special needs of the marginalized, the dispossessed, and the victims of catastrophe, conflict and violence.”
